Malaysia’s The Star Online reported the boat’s captain and a crew member were found on Sunday afternoon in the waters between the island of Pulau Tiga and an offshore oil drilling platform. The Chinese consulate in Kota Kinabalu said multiple survivors “were reported drifting at sea waiting for rescue”, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.
Chinese state television said the crew reported helping passengers put on life jackets as the boat was sinking. The boat left Kota Kinabalu, the capital of the eastern Malaysian state of Sabah, at about 9:00am (local time) on Saturday bound for the popular tourist spot of Mengalum island, officials said.
It was reported missing on Saturday night after failing to arrive at the island and a search operation was launched, Sabah and Labuan Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) deputy director Rahim Ramli said. But bad weather was hampering the search effort, which covers an area of about 400 nautical square miles (1,374 square kilometres). “We are looking at strong winds and choppy waters,” Mr Ramli said.
The Malaysian navy, maritime police and air force were involved in the search, the MMEA said in a statement. Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said in a tweet he was monitoring developments in the search. The China National Tourism Administration said it had initiated emergency response procedures.
